About
Portland Arts Centre was officially opened in 1974, and for the first thirty-one years of its operations the building was named after Portland CEMA Inc, in recognition of the vigorous lobbying and fund-raising conducted by this organisation.
The building, which is owned and managed by Glenelg Shire Council, was renamed the Portland Arts Centre in July 2005.
It is a multi-purpose venue, servicing not only the needs of various of arts groups but also local community organisations in general. The building has a proscenium arch theatre seating 144, which is equipped with a range of quality lighting and sound equipment, plus a conservatory-size grand piano.
In addition, there are two linked exhibition spaces – the CEMA Gallery and the Woolcock Gallery – both of which have appropriate lighting and provision for the display of both 2-D and 3-D art works.
The venue is managed by the Cultural Services Officer and presents a regular program of professional touring performances plus local and touring exhibitions.
