Malthouse Theatre is a Company dedicated to the development, production and promotion of contemporary Australian Theatre.
Underlying the Company’s mission is
Programming predominantly new work with a contemporary focus.
Ongoing development of The Malthouse as a major centre for contemporary arts.
Recognition and support for The Malthouse as an iconic contemporary performing arts centre and an historic landmark building.
Recognition of the importance of the contemporary arts precinct which includes The Malthouse and Ngargee – (adjacent to The Malthouse) as the home of the Australian Centre for Contemporary Art (ACCA) and Chunky Move, Melbourne’s contemporary dance company.
The Malthouse has been home to Playbox Theatre Company Ltd trading as Malthouse Theatre as the resident company since opening in 1990.
The Malthouse has three theatres - the Merlyn Theatre @ 500 seats, the Beckett Theatre @ 198 seats, and the Tower Theatre @ 100 seats, together with rehearsal rooms, administration, set and wardrobe construction area, dressing rooms, café, kitchen and bar facilities.
Each year over 100,000 people attend over 500 performances at the venue including Malthouse Theatre performances, our Education Programme and presentations by external hirers. We also sell tickets to a range of venues throughout Melbourne (approximately 200 performances and $500,000 sales).
