Her Majesty's Theatre

Since 1875 and throughout its history Her Majesty’s Theatre has been continuously used as a venue for live performance as Ballarat’s focus for the performing arts. With 959 seats in a Stalls and two balconies areas, plus a dome and a decorated proscenium arch Her Majesty’s has the accolade of being the oldest, purpose-built theatre building in Australia.

Following renovation in 1990 Her Majesty’s now is a successful combination of old and new, retaining and preserving the significant heritage listed building and Victorian auditorium, with state of the art backstage facilities, enabling presentation of contemporary theatre to modern audiences.

The Theatre presents an annual Theatre Season of professional touring productions and has a busy calendar of commercial and local theatre performances including the Royal South Street Competitions. Her Majesty’s is owned and operated by the City of Ballarat, as a Business Unit of the City & Cultural Development Department.
