About
Toowoomba's Empire Theatre combines the grandeur of a heritage listed art-deco theatre with modern technical and staging facilities.
The Empire Theatre was originally built in 1911 as regional Australia's largest theatre, a title it still holds to this day. The building was all but destroyed by fire in 1933 and was rebuilt later the same year.
The Empire Theatre closed in 1971 but reopened in 1997 after an award-winning restoration with modern facilities to compliment the heritage listed, art-deco foyers and auditorium. The venue has enchanted visitors from around the world with its opulent auditorium, grand proscenium arch and unique "Bomber Light".
The Empire Theatre seats 1567 and has once again taken its role as central to the cultural life of the region. The company, Empire Theatres Pty. Ltd. also manages The Empire Studio (seats 250) and the Empire Church Theatre, an 1877 vintage chapel seating up to 300.
